Prologue:
Where to start? A crucial question for any big project. Before we really get into what we’re doing, let’s get to know each other first. We aren’t flippers or influencers. We also don’t have a secret hoard of dragon's gold. What we do have is an eclectic collection of skills we’ve picked up along the way from the places we’ve been. We love history, old places, and architecture. Our first experience with Weston was about 6 years ago when we saw a billboard for an asylum on our way back home and we’ve been visiting ever since. As we post, you’ll get to know us better.
“What are you going to do with it?” Since our purchase, everyone we’ve met has asked this question. We’ve defined our possibilities, but before we can truly lay out plans for the long-term life of this building, we have to stabilize it first.
Triage! There is extensive damage to the building’s rear addition (extensive roof repairs are overdue). The power is on, but thankfully the water is not (there is severe trauma in the plumbing department). I don’t even know what to say about the heating system, I’m sure it will have it’s own post soon enough. Even though it’s over 100 years old, so much of this building’s integrity and beauty is still intact.
Today, we were given the gift of the building’s blueprints by a generous descendant of a previous owner. It’s been incredibly satisfying to put together pieces of the building’s history through making connections and building community. Today, we also finished documenting the current status of the building’s “before” and golly….
